Researchers at The Nose Clinic in Guildford working with the Centre for Appearance Research asked 90 patients to rate how much lack of self-confidence they felt about their noses in society on a scale of from 0 (not at all) to 10 (all the time). Before the operation, patients rated their lack of self-confidence in social situations as 4.21 on the lack of self-confidence scale. After the operation, patients rated their lack of self-confidence as 2.00, a significant decrease in lack of self-confidence of 48%.
The recent study, led at The Nose Clinic by rhinoplasty specialist, Julian Rowe-Jones, revealed that patients having cosmetic nose surgery (rhinoplasty) also found their noses less noticeable, and that they worried less after their surgery. The patients were less likely to avoid work, social and sexual interactions. They also checked their appearance less.
Patients found that they feel more confident in social situations after having Rhinoplasty
The study’s findings are consistent with many other studies that claim rhinoplasty patients feel an improvement in their self esteem and quality of life after rhinoplasty. For the majority of rhinoplasty patients, rhinoplasty outcomes are favourable and patients are very happy with their new nose.
Most of the patients who undergo rhinoplasty have considered the decision for many years. While the majority of plastic surgery patients are middle-aged or older, a large number of rhinoplasty patients are young, in their 20s and 30s. Many patients have suffered years of embarrassment and shame due to real or perceived imperfections in their noses and feel that the surgery will bring them happiness.
One of Mr. Rowe-Jones’s patients noticed a significant improvement in her social life after having rhinoplasty: “I am a teenage girl that underwent rhinoplasty surgery at The Nose Clinic. Before surgery I was very conscious of my nose having been bullied at school. I hated eating out in restaurants and would not have my photograph taken if I could possibly avoid it.”
Because our society places a strong emphasis on appearance, people often judge others upon first introduction and try to hold them to the societal standards of beauty. Unfortunately, this can lead to excessive anxiety and self-scrutiny.
In such a case, undergoing a plastic surgery can visibly help and the best candidates for rhinoplasty are those who have a realistic body image and understand the implications of the surgery.
It is also important to note that the results of the study do not suggest that nose job procedure caused less nose noticeability among patients, but there is certainly a very positive association with those having the nose job procedure and the positive benefits that followed.
